Gold Price Fell 27% From Its Peak. Why Is the Safe Bet Falling?

Gold is what many people buy when they are worried about stocks, yet in October it lost more than stocks did. The gold price fell to $3,899 an ounce, the lowest in about a year, while the S&P 500 lost only 0.9% over the month.

That is 27% below gold’s record of $5,318, set in late January.

So anyone who moved money from stocks into gold this year to feel safer is now behind on both counts: their gold is worth less, and for most of them the stocks they left are up for the year.

Why is gold falling?

Gold is falling mostly because of interest rates. It pays you nothing while you hold it, but a savings account or a government bond pays interest. When people expect rates to stay high for longer, the interest you give up by holding gold gets bigger, and some owners sell.

That expectation grew stronger in October. Oil prices rose for a fourth month in a row, and new US figures showed that inflation picked up in September as people paid more for gasoline. The US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank both left rates unchanged that week but warned about inflation from energy costs, and that strengthened economists’ expectations of a US rate hike in December.

Analysts also point to two other things. Commerzbank said the sharp fall in tech stocks may have forced some investors who had borrowed to invest to sell other holdings, gold included, to cover their losses. And shoppers held back: buyers in India put off purchases hoping prices would fall further, while demand in China, the biggest buyer, stayed weak.

Why gold didn’t protect anyone this time

Gold often rises when stocks fall, but mostly when the fear is about a crash, a war or a crisis. This time the main worry in markets is interest rates staying high, and that is bad for gold too. So the two fell together instead of one cushioning the other.

Not everyone is selling. In the second quarter central banks bought 289 tonnes of gold, a record for that quarter, according to the World Gold Council. Over the same months, funds that hold gold for ordinary investors saw 45 tonnes flow out. Central banks tend to buy and hold for years, while fund investors react more to rates, so when rate worries grow it is mostly fund selling that shows up in the price.

Is gold cheap now?

It costs less than in January, but a lower price than at the peak doesn’t by itself make gold cheap.

A 27% fall tells you how far gold is from $5,318, not whether $3,899 is a fair price. If worries about rates pushed gold down, those worries are still here, so I think it could fall further. I can’t call the bottom, though.

I could easily be wrong. Commerzbank thinks the drop has gone too far and expects a recovery. If oil prices ease and a December rate hike starts to look unlikely, the main reason for the fall goes away, and central banks were still buying heavily as of mid-year. It also depends on when you bought: gold is only 2.9% below where it was a year ago, so the people who are really hurting are the ones who bought near the January peak.

What I did, and what to check if you own gold

I don’t own any gold myself. The part of my money I keep for safety is in dividend funds, which keep paying an income when markets drop, and gold pays none. When the headlines came out I checked the prices myself; at the Oct 30, 2026 close gold came to about $125 a gram. I didn’t buy or sell.

To judge where gold goes next, I don’t watch the gold price on its own, because then you follow the price without knowing why it moves. Instead I watch the US real interest rate, which is the interest left after inflation and shows up in the yield on inflation-protected Treasury bonds. I also watch the dollar and the price of oil. If real rates and oil prices start to fall, or the dollar weakens, the main pressure on gold would ease.

If you own gold, check one number this week: how much you would get if you sold it today. That is different from the price on the news, and the same ounce of gold can fetch quite different amounts depending on its form.

What you own What reduces the money you get when you sell
Bar or coin The dealer’s buying price is below the quoted price
Ring or other jewelry Valued only on its gold content (weight and purity); what you paid for making it isn’t returned
Gold fund Fees, plus tax on your gain, which depends on the country you live in
